Abstract
The invention relates to tetracyclines of general formula <FORM:0892590/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are 1 to 4 C alkyl or together with the attached N form a heterocyclic ring and wherein X is hydrogen or chlorine. The tetracyclines are produced by reacting a tetracycline of the general formula <FORM:0892590/IV (b)/2> with formaldehyde and a secondary amine of formula <FORM:0892590/IV (b)/3> wherein R1 and R2 and X are as defined above. The temperature of reaction is 0 DEG C.-50 DEG C. and preferably 20 DEG C.-25 DEG C. Typical starting tetracyclines are 6-demethyltetracycline and 7-chloro-6-demethyl tetracycline. Suitable secondary amines are dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, piperidine, pyrrolidine, morpholine and piperazine. The compounds possess the broad-spectrum activity of tetracyclines and are water-soluble and aqueous solutions may be used orally or parenterally.ALSO:Aqueous solutions of tetracyclines of general formula <FORM:0892590/VI/1> wherein R1 and R2 are 1 to 4 C alkyl or together with the attached N form a heterocyclic ring and wherein X is hydrogen or chlorine are used orally or parenterally and possess the broad spectrum activity of the tetracyclines.
