Abstract

892,375. Refining steel; foundry ladles. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION Ltd. May 17, 1960 [June 5, 1959], No. 19319/59. Classes 72 and 82(1). A method of adding aluminium or other element to steel in a ladle comprises progressively feeding a rod or wire of the material to be added at an appreciable depth below the surface of the steel. As shown, a ladle 1, to be filled with molten steel, has a hollow stopper rod 3 through which may be fed a wire 8 of aluminium from a coil 8a by means of electrically driven and remotely controlled rollers 9. When the stopper rod is raised the aluminium wire may be fed into the stream of metal issuing from a nozzle 2. Inamodification a dummy stopper rod extending nearly to the bottom of the ladle may be used, the wire be fed as the metal is poured into the ladle. The material may be in powder or granular form enclosed in a thin steel tube.
