Abstract

The production of sheet cellulosic products involves adhesively bonding at least two webs of cellulosic material with an alkali metal silicate adhesive in the presence of an additive which renders the adhesive self-releasing from metal surfaces contacted by the adhesive during the process. Sheet products made by the process are exemplified by a single faced product comprising a corrugated paper sheet bonded at the flutes on one side to a flat cellulosic liner and a double faced product comprising at least one corrugated paper sheet and flat cellulosic liners bonded to the flutes on both sides of the corrugated paper. The bonding may be effected by a composition of the adhesive containing the additive; alternatively, the additive may be applied to metal surfaces liable to contact with the adhesive during the process. The additive may be a silicone, a lubricating oil containing the silicone, urea and a silicone, colloidal graphite and an oil-soluble silicone. Examples of the preparations used in making single- and double-faced corrugated papers are (i) a formulation of sodium silicate (1Na2O: 3SiO2), water, and a urea-amyl ethoxy polysiloxane-wetting agent emulsion (ii) two formulations of sodium silicate (1 Na2O : 3,3SiO2) solution, clay, urea, cottonseed oil, triethanolamine and water, of viscosities 3,0-3,5 and 5,5-6,0 poise at 20 DEG C. (iii) formulations of sodium silicate (1Na2O : 3,3SiO2), water, triethanolamine, gluconic acid, clay and urea. Specifications 892,119 and 892,120 are referred to.
