Abstract

In a method of making sintered metal liners, valve guides and seats for internal combustion engines, sponge iron powder of 100-150 American mesh mixed with 1% by weight of graphite powder is compressed in a die at a pressure of 40,000 p.s.i. The resulting compressed engine part is sintered for about 30 minutes in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 2050 DEG F. The part is then cooled in a non-oxidising atmosphere and sized by cold pressing to the exact size required. Lead or other metal or alloy may be mixed in the proportion of 10 to 15% with the powdered iron.
