Abstract

An adherent layer is formed on a ceramic member by coating the ceramic with a powdered refractory material containing a minor proportion by weight of an active metal, selected from titanium, zirconium and hafnium and heating in a non-oxidising atmosphere to a temperature below the ceramic maturing temperature. The active metal must be included in a form such that the specified heating causes it to secure the refractory material to the ceramic, e.g. it may be a hydride but not a carbide. The refractory material may be e.g. molybdenum, a molybdenum-manganese, or an iron-tungsten mixture, or it may be a carbide or mixture of carbides, together with the active metal. A preferred mixture comprises by weight 67% tungsten carbide, 23% titanium carbide and 10% titanium hydride. Suitable ceramic compositions, and details of preparation, coating and heating are given. A second refractory coating without an active metal additive may be applied and this may be of similar materials to the first or may be e.g. 95% molybdenum and 5% molybdenum oxide. After the application of one or both coatings the ceramic member may be bonded to a metal member e.g. of nickel-iron alloy, by first sintering on to the coated ceramic a layer of powdered nickel or similar metal and then brazing the metal member to this with e.g. a silver-copper entectic solder.
