Apparatus for subjecting a body 10 to high pressures comprises a plurality of pressuremultiplying elements 12 ... 15 disposed symmetrically about the body and arranged to move towards each other, the elements being supported by a plurality of mounting structures 82 . . . 85 which are marginally interconnected through yieldable joints 95 ... 98 to form an articulated supporting frame. The body to be compressed is encased in a pyrophillite block 11 which is acted on by the anvils 20 of the pressuremultiplying elements, which may be hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical or other type, and exert a pressure up to and above 100,000 atmospheres. In the embodiment described, the elements are hydraulic and the anvils are secured by clamping rings 32 to stands 31, in turn secured to pistons 38 movable by hydraulic fluid supplied through passages 70 to diaphragms 61 in cylinders formed in blocks 49 mounted in the structures 82 ... 85 ; the diaphragms and seals 50, 56 prevent leakage of fluid. The pistons are retracted by air pressure supplied through passages 71. Tapered discs 35, 36 are interposed between the pistons and anvils and can be rotated to angularly adjust the anvils relative to the pistons, rings 39 being provided to clamp the anvils and discs to the pistons. The mounting structures are interconnected by pins 95 which may be tapered and engage expandable collets inserted within the holes of hinged joints at the marginal ends of the structures. Four, six or eight pressure multiplying elements may be arranged to compress tetrahedron, cubic or octahedron bodies. Four elements may also be arranged in a common plane to compress a square-sectioned body, the ends of which are not confined. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 847,067.
