Abstract

890,988. Friction hoist brakes. ROBEY & CO. Ltd., and CROMPTON, A. May 7, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5992/57. Classes 78 (2) and 78 (5). The ropes of friction winch drum 100 are braked by shoe 1 impelled by springs 4, the shoe (or shoes) pressing the ropes against the rope treads of the drum. The shoes 1 are kept in the retracted position by fluid pressure entering cylinder 3 at 5, the piston 2 retracting shoe 1. The brakes may be applied by the winch operator, or automatically if the wind is exceeded and may be additional to normal winch drum braking such as set out in Specification 846,555. The brake need not be hydraulic and may be mechanical.
