In a power-operated brake, particularly for winding engines, of the kind described in the parent Specification, an additional fluid pressure cylinder 3, 4 is added whereby the force applied to engage the brake shoes on the drum by the spring 8 is implemented by fluid pressure acting on the left-hand side of piston 4, which through crosshead 5, rods 6 and member 7 further compresses the spring 8. Thus, if during normal operation, pressure is always present in the cylinder 3, and when during operation the force of the pressure in cylinder 3 acting in combination with that of the spring 8 itself is balanced against the force of pressure acting against piston 2, a reduced braking effort can be obtained by the simultaneous reduction of pressure in both cylinders 1 and 3. In another embodiment the auxiliary cylinder and piston 3 are secured to the opposite brake post.
