Abstract

890,647. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. June 30, 1958 [June 29, 1957], No. 20622/57. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake of the kind in which friction pads 21 are adapted to be urged into engagement with opposite sides of a rotatable brake disc 10 by pistons working in opposed hydraulic cylinders in the limbs of a stationary caliper housing straddling a portion of the periphery of the disc, the friction pads are staggered or offset in a circumferential direction and one pad is applied by a piston working in a single cylinder 27 and the other pad is applied by pistons working in two angularly-spaced cylinders 28, 29 in the other limb of the caliper housing, the mid-point between the axes of the two angularly spaced cylinders being staggered or offset with respect to the axis of the single cylinder in the same direction as the staggering or offsetting of the friction pads such that with the disc rotating in the normal forward direction a twisting couple is applied to the caliper housing in a direction opposing the twisting force due to the torque on the caliper so that the stresses on the caliper housing and its mounting are reduced. Specifications 742,338 and 840,463 are referred to.
