Abstract

1456004 Spot-type disc brakes AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 11 Feb 1974 [13 Feb 1973] 7066/73 Heading F2E An assembly of parts of a disc brake for motor vehicles includes a component 27 for movement along a path parallel to the axis of a brake disc 29, the component 27 being adapted for sliding engagement with mounting means 33 which, in use, are fixed to part of the vehicle structure so that the component is located slidably, brake applying means (e.g. a piston, not shown, in an hydraulic cylinder 30) for moving one brake pad 35 and for exerting a reaction force on the component 27 so as to move another brake pad 34, and a body 10 which is mounted on the structure part by the mounting means 33 to form a rigid assembly prevented from angular movement which might otherwise be caused by disc movement. Body 10 forms a closed loop, within which the caliper 27 bridge is accommodated. Each bolt 33 has an unthreaded part which extends through aligned bores 13, 14, Fig. 3, and along grooves 12, Figs. 3 and 4, along one side of the body 10. Opposite each groove 12 is a further groove 32 in the caliper 27, Fig. 4. Body 10 has four limbs 14, 15, 17, 18; limbs 15, 17 have pegs 19, 21, respectively, Fig. 4, directed towards cylinder 30 and co-operating with recesses 39 and 40, respectively, provided in backplate 37 of brake pad 34. One end of a wire clip 45 is located in a notch 42 of backplate 37, Figs. 4 and 1, so as to support, but permit paraxial movement of, the brake pad. The clip 45 is secured to body 10. For pad removal, clip 45 is disengaged and the pad is pivoted around peg 19 by a handle 41 until recess 40 is clear of peg 21. Similar arrangements are provided for pad 35 (see Fig. 1). As shown, the hydraulic cylinder 30 is carried by, or forms part of, the caliper 27 at one end, and carries a handbrake operating mechanism 36 and an adjusting device (not shown) which are described in Specification 1,355,960. The bolts 33 are secured to the vehicle differential housing.
