Abstract

890,061. Pipe joints. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 18, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 37005/59. Addition to 849,123. Class 99(1). The joint of the parent Specification is modified by the clamping means being arranged within at least one of the members of the joint so as to be contacted by the fluid flowing through the member. As shown in Fig. 1, a steel pipe 1 and a graphite pipe 2 are joined by a steel bolt 4 mounted in spider-like members 3, 5, located within the pipes 1, 2, the undersurface 4a of the bolt being drawn by a nut 7 in contact with the member 5 in a plane co-planar with the sealing plane Y-Y in which the pipes meet. In modifications (a) apertures in one of the spider members and segmental flow ports in the head of the bolt mounted in the member provide passages for the flow of fluid ; (b) graphite pipes 43, 44, Fig. 5, are provided respectively with an integral spider member 47 and with a steel spider member having a rim 54 engaging a lip 45 on the pipe 44 when a bolt 50 is tightened ; (c) the spherical end of a screw 29, Fig. 7, screwed in a steel spider member 27 secured in a steel pipe 20 engages a corresponding surface on a compression member 31 which bears against a boss 25 of a graphite spider integral with a graphite pipe 21. The member 31 and the boss 25 have interengaging spigot and socket portions 31a, 26 and the pipes 20, 21 have interengaging lips 23, 22 ; (d) a hollow compression member is interposed between apertured plugs 34, 38, Fig. 9, secured respectively in a zircalloy pipe 33 and a steel pipe 32 and provided with fluid passageways 37, 40.
