Abstract

890,034. Knitting. PARTHUM, R. Oct. 29, 1959 [Nov. 1, 1958 ; Oct. 28, 1959], No. 36813/59. Class 74 (2). A run-resistant fabric is produced on a circular machine by providing flexible loop transferring elements 16 housed within inner and outer sleeve members 11, 10 and actuated by cams in a cam cylinder 22 as the needle cylinder and sleeves rotate so that the elements are projected to engage a loop on a needle and spread it over the adjacent needle to enable it to be taken by that needle when it is raised, Figs. 3, 4. The spreading action is achieved by there being slight relative rotation between the sleeves and needle cylinder. Alternatively the members may be actuated by separate members having butts actuated by cams on the outside of needle cylinder, a supplementary cam being provided which in the event of one butt on a member becoming inoperative actuates a second butt and in so doing operates a stop motion to stop the machine. The transfer elements may alternatively engage a loop of a preceding course and transfer that loop to the needle of an adjacent wale to be knitted with the next course, Fig. 19. A stationary tube having an upper funnelshaped end may be provided and within which the fabric is withdrawn from the needles. A gap is provided in the upper end of the tube to enable the loop transferring elements to project therethrough and in the event of an element failing to be withdrawn after it has been advanced it engages one edge of the gap in the tube causing the tube to slightly rotate, thereby actuating a stop motion. The needle slots may be wedge shape as illustrated in Fig. 12 to accommodate the needles.
