Abstract
889,415. Hydraulic torque converters. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. Aug. 26, 1960 [Aug. 29, 1959], No. 29601/60. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic torque converter comprises a clutch 8, Fig. 1, between a primary part 2 having impeller blading 2a and a secondary part 3 having runner blading 3a, the bladings lying radially outside guide wheel blading 5a, 5b, and means for selectively emptying the chamber of the converter at least as far as the outer diameter of the guide wheel blading and for refilling the chamber. A gap 9 between the impeller blading 2a and the guide wheel blading 5b leads to an annular channel 10 having one or more outlets 12 which can be closed by movement of a ring 13. When the clutch 8 is engaged, the converter is emptied as far as the diameter of the gap 9 by opening the outlets 12 so that the guide wheel blading, which is stationary, does not have a braking effect. The coupling is refilled by closing the outlets and supplying fluid through a filling passage 11. In another embodiment, the gap 19, Fig. 2, leads to an annular channel 20 in which is a scoop tube 21 connected to at least one piston valve 23. The valve may be operated mechanically, pneumatically, hydraulically or, as shown, by the pressure in the filling passage 26 which urges the piston against a spring 24 so that an outlet 25 is closed. When the clutch is engaged, the fluid pressure in the passage 26 is disconnected and the pressure in the converter and channel acts on the piston to open the outlet. In a further embodiment, the gap 33, Fig. 3, leads to a chamber 31 having an outlet 34 which, when fluid pressure is supplied to the converter through a filling passage 36, moves the diaphragm 35 of a quickemptying valve against the outlet. The pressure in the converter moves the diaphragm away from the outlet when the fluid pressure in the passage 36 is disconnected and the clutch engaged. The converter may be completely emptied by ducts at the outer periphery of the impeller or runner.
