Abstract

251,900. Bauer, G. Dec. 21, 1925. Hydraulic transmission of power.- In hoisting apparatus, cranes &c. of the kind in which a hydraulic coupling 3, 4 is placed between the driving engine and the winding drum 1, braking pistons 9 are provided on the driven part of the coupling which act on a stationary braking surface 15 when a predetermined speed is reached. Outlet controlling rings 6 and the ring casing 7 are mounted on the outer circumference of the driven member 4 of the coupling, and passages 12 are provided in the casing 7 which lead to the annular chamber 8 containing the pistons 9 and are opened or closed by pressure valves 13. The pistons 9 normally are held out of contact with the surface 15 by springs 14. Small openings 18 permit the slow escape of the working fluid. In a modification, the valves 13 are dispensed with and the pistons are provided with extensions which constitute the valves. When the speed of the drum 1 reaches a predetermined value, the pressure in the member 4 is sufficient to open the valves 13, and the pistons are forced finally against the surface 15. When the speed falls, the valves 13 close and the springs 14 take off the brakes.
