889,328. Voltage measuring. NEDERLANDSCHE INSTRUMENTEN-EN ELECTRISCHE APPARATEN FABRIEK N.V. May 2, 1958 [May 6, 1957], No. 14145/58. Class 37. In apparatus for measuring the voltage of a source T having a large internal resistance, such as a thermocouple, a millivoltmeter M is connected across the source, and a compensating voltage of the same polarity as the source is connected through resistor R to the meter M, a potentiometer P enabling this voltage to be adjusted to a predetermined value, the adjustment being made with T disconnected from M. The magnitude of the compensating voltage, when T is connected to M, will be less than the predetermined value owing to an increase in the volts drop across resistor R arriving from the current flow through T from the compensating source. When the voltage developed by T increases to the predetermined value, no current flows through T from the compensating supply, and the compensating voltage applied to M rises to the predetermined value, the volts drop across R decreasing accordingly. The meter M thus indicates when the source voltage reaches a predetermined value, this indication being unaffected by the high internal resistance of T. An adjustable contact O set to the predetermined value of the voltage may be provided, whereby when the source voltage reaches this value, a contact on the pointer W engages O for signalling or regulating purposes.
