Abstract

825,083. Measuring bridges. UNILEVER Ltd. Feb. 20, 1958 [Jan. 11, 1957], No. 1140/57. Class 37. Apparatus for measuring the conductivity of a liquid incorporating automatic compensation for variations in temperature comprises a first bridge consisting of the two parts 1, 2 of a centre-tapped transformer winding, a conductivity cell 4 and a balancing resistor 5, and a second bridge consisting of the same two half windings 1, 2, a thermistor 6 in contact with the liquid in cell 4, and a balancing resistor 7, the first bridge being fed from an A.C. source 3 and the second bridge being fed from the same source via a potentiometer 11 coupled to balancing resistor 5. With the second bridge disconnected, the first bridge is balanced with liquids of different known conductivities, at the same constant temperature, whereby resistor 5 is calibrated. The temperature is then altered and potentiometer 11 and resistor 12 adjusted so that the combined double bridge retains its balance over the desired temperature range. If the temperature-sensitive element 6 and the liquid in cell 4 have temperature coefficients of resistance of opposite sign, elements 6 and 7 are interchanged. In modifications either bridge may be connected between tappings on windings 1, 2.
