Abstract

1,222,379. Measuring temperature, electrically. N.R. DAVIS. Sept. 24, 1968 [Sept. 25, 1967], No. 43604/67. Heading G1U. [Also in Division G3] In a resistance bridge circuit for measuring temperature, a thermistor T having an exponential characteristic and a resistor R having a resistance equal to the resistance of the thermistor at a temperature midway in the range of operation are connected to form electrically adjacent arms of the bridge, the other two arms being so arranged that the sum of their resistances is constant, whereby any unbalance of the bridge measured across the diagonal between the junction of the thermistor and resistor R and the junction between the other two arms is linearly related to the temperature of the thermistor. Inthearrangement shown in Fig. 5, a high resistance meter I can be connected across said diagonal by pushbutton PBI to indicate the bridge unbalance and can be connected across potentiometer VR by push-button PBC for calibration purposes. The output from a long tailed pair differential amplifier T1, T2 switches transistor T3 on to energize a relay RL to control a heater (not shown) when the bridge unbalance exceeds a given amount. The particular temperature at which control is effected is adjustable, using potentiometer VR. In an alternative arrangement Fig. 1 (not shown), said diagonal includes a high impedance voltmeter (G) connected to the wiper of the potentiometer (VR) which in use is adjusted to balance the bridge and is calibrated linearly in temperature. A second meter may be connected in parallel in said diagonal to a respective independent wiper of the potentiometer for indicating bridge unbalance. Alternatively two bridge circuits may be provided, the resistor R and thermistor T being common to both. Temperature probes. The resistor R may be mounted physically adjacent the thermistor T within a probe P or in the connector leads of the probe or in a plug or socket by which the probe is connectable to the remainder of the circuit. A small additional resistance (T) may be connected in series with the thermistor. Resistors R and (r) may be adjustable, or merely selected, to give the required temperature range.
