889,279. Distilling coal and shale; contacting a gas with a liquid. GLASER, W. Nov. 5, 1958 [Feb. 14, 1958], No. 3545/58. Addition to 844,922. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). [Also in Groups III and XIII] The parent Specification describes a heattransfer apparatus (suitable for the distillation of coal and shale) in which a material to be treated is supplied through a pipe g to the interior of a rotor a having a heat-transmission surface n, the rotor being surrounded by an insulated shell q to which a gaseous heating medium is supplied through a pipe p and the outside of the rotor being provided with ribs, fins or blades E, which may be perforated. This apparatus is now modified by the provision of stationary ribs F which extend into the spaces between the ribs, fins or blades E. The ribs F may be corrugated, and both they and the ribs, fins or blades E may have projecting bolts or the like, to increase their surface. The operation of the apparatus may also be modified in that liquid to be evaporated or concentrated may be treated by direct contact with hot gases in the shell q, or waste gases to be washed and freed from sulphur dioxide may be similarly treated with a suspension of lime.
