Abstract

1470334 Sulphuric acid RALPH M PARSONS CO 19 April 1974 [23 April 1973] 17280/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] In a multiple contact/multiple absorption process for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, a positive flow of external heat is maintained into the ductwork leading from the absorption tower to the gas-to-gas heat exchanger by passing a fluid heating medium through an array of spaced tubes in contact with said ductwork, said tubes being surrounded by a reinforcing layer and an outside insulation to provide between said tubes a gas space heated by the flow of the fluid heating medium through said tubes, the flow of external heat into the ductwork being sufficient to maintain the gas stream above the dew point of sulphuric acid carried by the gas stream to maintain the acid in the vapour phase, thereby minimizing corrosion of the ductwork due to condensation of sulphuric acid on its surfaces. The gas-to-gas heat exchanger may contain a high temperature zone positioned at approximately the point of introduction of the gas stream from the ductwork, said zone being maintained at a temperature above the condensation temperature of sulphuric acid by the flow of gas from a conversion stage through said heat exchanger to prevent condensation of sulphuric acid on heat exchanger surfaces.
