889,135. Visual landing-aids for aircraft. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959], No. 41775/59. Class 118. [Also in Group XI] A lamp for use in the visual landing system described in Specification 879,611 comprises a mounting member to be releasably attached to the optical bench of the system, a mirror in the form of the cap of an ellipsoid having circular symmetry about the major axes and a ratio between 3 : 1 and 5 : 1 between the major and minor axes and an adjustable socket to support a lamp with the planet at the focus of the ellipsoid nearer to the mirror. Preferably the ratio between the axes lies between 2.6 :1 and 1.8: 1. The filter used in the system is located between the two faci and the slit beyond the focus remote from the mirror. In the form shown, the mirror 12 is secured in an aperture in a base-plate 10 and has a cylindrical extension 15 to accommodate the neck 16 of the bulb 25 in a holder 18 adjustably secured to a flange 19 at the end of the extension 15 by screws 23. The extension 15 may be arranged at an angle to the major axis of the mirror so that the centre part of the mirror may be used. The bulb 25 has a linear filament 22 passing through the focus F1 nearer the mirror. A concave cylindrical reflector 24 is mounted inside the bulb with the axis co-incident with the filament and is provided with a horizontal central slot to allow the passage of some direct light. Altematively, a spherical mirror may be used having its focus at the filament. This mirror may be mounted inside the lamp envelope or formed by silvering part of the envelope internally or externally. Specification 830,043 also is referred to.
