Abstract

889,080. Moulding insulation on electrical connectors. GARDENER, R. H. April 27, 1960, No. 14819/60. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a method of insulating the connections between cables and terminals which are mounted on an insulating base, in particular the connections between cables and the terminals of a plug mounted in a base 37, Fig. 4, a flexible ring 48 is located round the cables and a split die 49 is placed round the connections so as to embrace the base and compress the ring. Thermoplastic material 45 is then injected into the die so as to surround the connections such material, when set, locking the base and ring in position. The die may form a groove 51 in the materal 45 for receiving part of a split clamp for locking the plug in a co-operating socket. Where the plug has to withstand severe environmental conditions a coating of for example, P.T.F.E. is provided over the moulded insulation. Figs. 7 and 8 show a plug manufactured by a two stage moulding operation The pins with the cables connected thereto are first located in a jig 55, Fig. 7, and, using a mould 56, thermoplastic material 57 is moulded round the connections and round a disc 59 engaging stepped portions of the cable insulation. A second mould 60, Fig. 8, is then placed round the material 57 and round a flexible ring 62 surrounding the cables, and thermoplastic material injected to form a body 61 round the cables.
