Abstract

887,764. Free piston engines. BRAUN, A. July 22, 1960, No. 25649/60. Class 7(1). In an opposed-piston free-piston engine which may be for use as a gas generator the synchronizing mechanism comprises a synchronizer rod 12 having spaced apart end portions, and a centre portion and helical tracks 15 on the end portions of the rod, each of the compressor pistons 6, 7 having an aperture to receive an end portion of the rod and track follower means 17 operatively associated with each aperture. The rod may have mounted thereon engine accessory driving means comprising a cam 20. There may be resilient mounting means between the rod and the compressor pistons comprising a mounting bushing in each compressor piston and having a helical track therein mating with one of the helical tracks on the rod and a resilient connection connecting each bushing to its compressor piston. The rod may be provided with an axial bore 19 which may be utilized for the circulation of a cooling medium or as a passage for equalising pressures in the various chambers through which the rod passes. Each helical track 15 may have an angle different from that of the other or the rod may be given a slight axial movement.
