Abstract

Metal-containing catalyst residues are removed from polymers of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons by treating the polymer with an alcohol containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon and hydrogen chloride, or an acid chloride which will liberate hydrogen chloride in the presence of the alcohol, separating the polymer and washing it with a liquid hydrocarbon. The polymer may finally be treated with steam in the presence of a small quantity of wetting agent and the polymer subsequently dried in vacuo. Polymers mentioned are polyethylene and polypropylene particularly isotactic polypropylene. The liquid hydrocarbon may be the unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer but is preferably an inert hydrocarbon such as propane, butane, or pentane. The acid chloride may be thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, or acetyl chloride. The alcohol may be an octanol, nonanol, decanol, or a dodecanol. The preferred alcohol is 3,5,5-trimethyl-hexanol-1. The exemplified catalyst residues are those formed by reacting a titanium compound such as a titanium halide, e.g. titanium tetrachloride or trichloride with an organo-compound of aluminium, e.g. an aluminium alkyl. Specifications 840,497 and 877,050 are referred to.
