Abstract

Polyolefines, obtained by means of a polymerization catalyst consisting of the reaction product of titanium halide and an organo aluminium compound, are purified by suspending the crude polymer containing the catalyst residues in a liquid hydrocarbon and contacting it with oxygen, a free oxygen containing gas or an oxygen donor, in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon, ether, amine olefine or nitrogen containing heterocyclic compound, thereby transforming, at least in part, the catalyst residues into compounds which are soluble in the liquid hydrocarbon and which are removed from the polymer by washing with the hydrocarbon. The polyolefine may be polypropylene. The liquid hydrocarbon may be n-heptane which may contain 5-30% of one or more aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, and may be technical heptane. The contacting stage may be carried out at 20-100 DEG C. using dry air and the polymer may be washed with n-heptane to remove any aluminium compound not bound to the titanium in the catalyst complex prior to the contacting stage. The catalyst may consit of the reaction product of titanium trichloride and aluminium diethylmonochloride and the polyolefine may be produced by polymerizing the olefine in heptane.
