<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

The present invention relates to the purification of solid polymers of ethylene.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
thylene by polymerization of ethylene in the presence of catalysts, which are formed by reaction of compounds of metals of the 4th to 6th subgroups of the periodic system with alkyl aluminum compounds.
This polymerization is generally carried out using catalysts, which are formed by reaction of tetra-
<EMI ID = 2.1>
It is also known that the polymers obtained in this way, which contain these metal compounds, can be purified by decomposing the metal compounds present with the aid of mineral acids and then washing the polymers with water or methanol. By this mode of purification, the metal compounds are not entirely
- eliminated, to such an extent that polymers having a high ash content are obtained, this content being higher <EMI ID = 3.1>
According to another known purification process,
the polymer is purified by extraction with an alcohol, to which
<EMI ID = 4.1>
in their molecule. In this mode of purification, the alcohol reacts with the remains of the catalyst, so that they
dissolve in alcohol. Since large amounts of alcohol are required, this purification method is unattractive for application on an industrial scale.
It has now been found that solid polymers of ethylene, which are obtained by polymerizing ethylene with the aid of a catalyst formed by reacting tetrachloride / titanium with an alkyl aluminum halide, can be purified) in a simple way, by extracting the heated polymer
<EMI ID = 5.1>
bide to which is added an amount not exceeding 5% by volume of said hydrocarbon of an alcohol containing at least 3 carbon atoms per molecule.
In the process according to the invention, the remains
of catalyst are transformed by the alcohol into products, which dissolve in the hydrocarbon. It is not necessary to add more alcohol than it does for this leftover processing. catalysts. Preferably, only a small amount of alcohol is used, i.e. 0.5 to 1% by vol. of - the hydrocarbon.
The use of larger amounts of alcohol than those required according to the invention risks giving rise to the formation of compounds, which are difficult. soluble in hydrocarbon.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the alcohol is added to the suspension, obtained as the end product of the polymerization of ethylene, of polyethylene in the hydrocarbon, which is used as an inert medium for the polymerization. This embodiment offers the advantage
f
that the polyethylene must not be previously separated from the hydrocarbon in order to be subsequently purified. By converting the catalyst residues into hydrocarbon-soluble products already before repairing the polyethylene, a purer polymer is separated during filtration, which can be further purified by washing with a hydrocarbon.
It goes without saying that the polyethylene can also first be separated and then be extracted using a hydrocarbon, to which alcohol is added, for example by putting there
the polymer in suspension.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
lower alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol, do not form together with the catalyst products, which dissolve in the hydrocarbon, so these lower alcohols cannot be used. Suitable alcohols, which it is
