Abstract

A continuous process for working up a polyolefin produced by a Ziegler low-pressure polymerization process, comprises contacting the polymerization product with a lower (i.e. one containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule) aliphatic alcohol, agitating the resulting slurry with or without prior separation of an alcoholic phase therefrom, with an aqueous extractant, subjecting the resulting water-containing slurry mixture to phase separation, removing the aqueous phase containing alcohol and removing inert solvent from the slurry so as to isolate the polyolefin by first removing supernatant solvent and then the remaining solvent by heat treatment under reduced pressure. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylene and their mixtures. The inert solvent may be a hydrocarbon and the extractant a dilute aqueous alkaline one, some of the alcoholic aqueous phase being returned to the aqueous alkaline agitation stage to maintain the alcoholic concentration at 15 to 20%. The polyolefin-solvent slurry may be washed by agitation with water containing a small amount of a surface-active agent. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
