Abstract

A process for purifying polyolefins comprising (1) obtaining a low-pressure polyolefin by a Ziegler process, (2) separating from the reaction mixture at least part of the liquid reaction medium used in the polymerization, (3) treating the remaining raw-polymer at a temperature up to 100 DEG C with mixture of an alcohol, a hydrocarbon and hydrogen chloride, (4) washing the treated polymer to neutrality, (5) treating the neutral polymer with a water-soluble alcohol, and (6) drying it. In the Example, ethylene is polymerized using a TiCl4-(C2H5)2AlCl catalyst and hydrogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon fraction as a solvent, the bulk of the solvent removed from the resulting polymer solution, the polymer treated with a HCl-isopropanol-hydrocarbon (as used in polymerization) mixture, washed to neutrality and filtered, the remainder of the solvent removed by means of steam, the resulting moist polymer treated with isopropanol, filtered, and dried.
