Abstract

886,643. Terminating cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Sept. 5, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 30282/59. Class 36. In a method for making an oil-filled cable installation the lower end of the cable forms the upper end of the shorter limb of a U-tube and, after sealing the upper end of the cable against entry of air, oil is allowed to flow out through the upper end of the shorter limb until the pressure at this point is sufficiently reduced to enable jointing or termination to take place. After evacuating the jointing or termination, oil is introduced to refill the cable and fill the applied jointing or termination. In a modification, firstly, part of the cable is run out and oil is allowed to drain from the shorter limb of the U-tube. This may be repeated several times before the jointing or termination operation as outlined above. A vacuum is maintained in the upper part of the longer limb until after the jointing or termination by attaching a vacuum pump to this end before allowing any oil to drain out from the lower end of the cable.
