Abstract

868,514. Coating by dipping. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Feb. 25, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 6707/59. Class 82(2) In a method of metallizing wire or strip,. molten metal is applied to the surface thereof and surplus metal removed by passing the wire through a mass of elastomeric material which exerts pressure on the wire by virtue of the application of fluid under super-atmospheric pressure to the wall of material surrounding the wire. Thus copper wire 1 may be tinned by running it through a bath of molten tin or tin-rich alloy, and surplus metal then removed by passing the wire upwards through cylinder 2 of natural or synthetic rubber contained in fluid-tight chamber 3, pressure being applied to the cylinder by oil or water supplied to annular space 11 through pipe 12. An arrangement is disclosed (Fig. 3, not shown), in which the thickness of the coating is controlled by varying the fluid pressure.
