782,340. Piston packing. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 29, 1956 [April 2, 1955], No. 9985/56. Class 122 (1). A piston ring 1 having a number of circumferential grooves 3 on its working face is coated both in the grooves 3 and on the lands 5 therebetween with a layer of metal 4 softer than that of the ring, and of the wall of the cylinder in which the ring is to be used. The coating may be of copper, brass, lead, bronze, tin, whitemetal or lead, and may be applied by immersion of the ring in molten metal, by spraying, by plating or, preferably, by electrodeposition. Preferably, there are at least five grooves and the lands are not more than 3 mm. wide.
