Abstract
886,641. Vacuum cleaners ; air filters. KENT CO. Inc. Aug. 27, 1959 [April 8, 1959], No. 29306/59. Classes 8(1) and 8(2). A vacuum cleaner comprises a lower housing 11 secured to an upper housing 18 containing the fans 20. The hose connection 14 is associated with a deflector 44 to direct incoming air circumferentially and to separate the dirt, which is collected in the container 11. Two filter bags 38, 40 and frame 36 are mounted in the top of the container together with a fine filter 42 for particles or bacteria of a size larger than 0À3 microns. The bag 40 is attached to the container 11 and collects dirt for disposal when the container is inverted. The filter 38 attached to the frame 36, the flange 34 of which is covered with sealing material, forms a joint between the parts 11, 18. The partition plate 46 has two holes cut in it for the passage of air to the fans, whilst it and the inside surface of housing 18 are lined with foam rubber 47 to seal off the upper from the lower compartment and reduce the transmission of noise and vibration to the outside of the machine. The filter 42 is made up from one or more blankets of resin impregnated glass wool 54 the individual fibres of which have a maximum diameter of 1À25 microns and is held between upper 52 and lower 56 mesh supports, the lower having an annular ring fixed thereon, drilled to slip over threaded studs and fixed in by wing nuts, the filter blankets extending beyond the ring to ensure effective edge filtering. After leaving housing 18 the air passes through an opening 72 into a sound muffler 24 where it is diffused, discharging into the atmosphere through the peripheral ports 26.
