Abstract

A process for the manufacture of granulates of polyethylene produced by a high pressure process comprises maintaining the polyethylene at 150 DEG to 190 DEG C. and at an excess pressure of up to 10 atmospheres, and feeding the polyethylene at constant rate to a granulating device in which it is, in one operation, initially mixed intensively and subsequently granulated. The polyethylene may be subjected to counter-mixing in the granulating device. Additives, e.g. stabilizers, may be incorporated in the polyethylene by metering into the granulating device at a point closely preceding the point of entry of the polyethylene. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of granulates of polyethylene produced by a high pressure process comprises maintaining the polyethylene at 150 to 190 DEG C. and at an excess pressure of up to ten atmospheres, and feeding the polyethylene at a constant rate to a granulating device in which it is in one operation initially mixed intensively and subsequently granulated. The granulating device may be in the form of a worm granulator provided at the outlet with a nozzle and cutting device, and the polyethylene may be subjected to counter-mixing therein, e.g. by providing large clearance between the worm and cylinder wall, or damming sills or worm runs which may be reciprocally displaced in the axial direction. Additives, e.g. stabilisers, may be incorporated in the polyethylene by introducing them into the granulating device at a point closely preceding the point of entry of the polyethylene. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated.
