Abstract

902,099. Extrusion machines. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. Sept. 20, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959], No. 36672/59. Class 87(2). The back-pressure in a machine for extruding thermoplastic synthetic resins can be varied by changing the length of an orifice of annular cross-section situated between the screw and the die, the cross-section being uniform along the length. In the machine illustrated, resin fed from the screw 3 to the die 5 has to pass through the orifice 9 formed between that part of the passage 4 through the manifold 1 which is of reduced diameter and that part of a plunger 7 which is of increased diameter. The length of the orifice 9 is altered by screwing the plunger 7 in or out by means of the hand-wheel 11 so as to adjust the back-pressure to the minimum value which will achieve the desired degree of refining or nixing of the resin, thus minimising the power required for the extrusion operation. The plunger need not be at right angles to the screw and may, for example, be placed in line with it, or it can be integral with the end of the screw itself, The movement of the plunger may be controlled by the back-pressure through a suitable servo-mechanism. The plunger may be capable of rotation relative to the mainifold at speeds of up to 5,000 r.p.m.
