Abstract
1,270,149. Plasticizing apparatus. SUNDBORG MACHINES CORP. 17 Sept., 1969 [11 Oct., 1968], No. 45833/69. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] Plasticizing apparatus, see Fig. 3, comprises a barrel 31, a ram 46 for forcing particulate plastics material fed through opening 42 into the barrel, and a rotor 50 for working the plastics material prior to its discharge through port 43, the rotor having a tapered portion 51 which diverges in the direction of material flow and a working portion 52 which comprises a plurality of axially spaced ridges and grooves. The tapered portion may be provided with ribs arranged either in curved manner, Fig. 7 (not shown), or parallel to the axis of the rotor. The tops of the ridges and the bottoms of the grooves may be rounded as shown; alternatively, some of them may be flat, Figs. 6, 8 (not shown). Slots or vanes may be formed in or on and/or between the ridges to improve flow, Figs. 9, 13 (not shown). The ridges may progressively increase in diameter in direction of material flow to narrow the gap between rotor and barrel wall, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, the ridges may be of the same diameter and the bore of the barrel may be tapered in converging manner. In a modification, see Fig. 10, the plasticizing apparatus comprises a barrel 111, a ram 169 for forcing plastics material into the barrel through opening 127, 128, and a rotor 112 having a tapered portion 137 and working portion 139 as described above, and a ram portion 131, the rotor being both rotatable and axially reciprocatable. The barrel may be heated by devices 172 and provided with cooling passages 171 adjacent the material inlet. Plasticized material may be forced through passage 121 to an injection-type mould, an accumulation chamber, or an extrusion device. In a further modification, the axially spaced ridges and grooves may be on the wall of the barrel and the working portion of the rotor may be smooth.
