Abstract
Olefins, such as C2-4 (or higher) mono-olefins or polyenes, are polymerized at elevated temperature and pressure in presence of a catalyst introduced as a mixture comprising Al, Mg, Hg and AlX3 or AlRX2 wherein X is halogen and R is alkyl. In place of Hg there may be used a Hg compound which liberates the metal in presence of the other catalyst components, e.g. mercuric acetate, chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphate, cyanide or chromate. In examples, ethylene with an Al/Mg/Hg/AlBr3 catalyst gave fractions boiling from below 60 DEG C. up to 300 DEG C. and a residue; using an Al/Mg/HgCl2/AlBr3 catalyst, ethylene gave liquid reaction products containing specifically hexene-1.ALSO:Olefins, such as C2-4 (or higher) mono-olefins or polyenes, are polymerised at elevated temperature and pressure in presence of a catalyst introduced as a mixture comprising Al, Mg, Hg and AlX3 or AlRX2 wherein X is halogen and R is alkyl. In place of Hg there may be used a Hg compound which liberates the metal in presence of the other catalyst components, e.g. mercuric acetate, chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, sulphate, cyanide or chromate.
