Abstract
Liquid polymers are prepared by polymerizing olefins containing at least 3 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst formed by reacting with ethylene a mixture comprising aluminium and an aluminium trihalide or an aluminium alkyl dihalide. The said mixture may also contain magnesium, mercury or a compound which liberates mercury in the presence of the other components, and metals, or compounds thereof, which metals have activity as hydrogenation catalysts, e.g. cobalt, iron, nickel, platinum, palladium and iridium. The metals may be present as alloys or amalgams. The preferred aluminium trihalide is aluminium bromide. The olefin may be propylene or a butene.ALSO:Liquid polymers are prepared by polymerising olefins containing at least 3 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst formed by reacting, with ethylene, a mixture comprising aluminium and an aluminium trihalide or an aluminium alkyl dihalide. The said mixture may also comprise magnesium, mercury or a compound which liberates mercury in the presence of the other components, and metals, or compounds thereof, which metals have activity as hydrogenation catalysts, e.g. cobalt, iron, nickel, platinum, palladium and iridium. The metals may be present as alloys or amalgams. The preferred aluminium trihalide is aluminium bromide. The olefin may be propylene or a butene. In examples propylene is polymerized in the presence of catalysts prepared from (1) aluminium chloride and aluminium to give a product comprising 2-methylpentene-1, 2-methyl pentene-2, 3- and 4-methyl pentene-1 and 4-methyl pentene-2; and (2) aluminium bromide, aluminium, magnesium, mercury and nickel chloride to give a product comprising 2-methyl-pentene-1.
