Abstract

885,767. Air filters. FILTERWERK MANN & HUMMEL G.m.b.H. June 15, 1960, No. 20982/60. Class 8(2). An air filter for internal combustion engines, compressors &c. in which the air to be filtered is drawn in through a cylindrical casing 1 via a suction pipe 22 and which then traverses an annular filter paper star 10, being part of the insert 7, to pass out of the filter through a connecting socket 4. The casing 1 is joined to a base portion 3 via periphral interlocking seal 2, the upper part of the casing 1 being formed with a short inwardly directed radial web 5 turned down at 6 to form a peripheral bearing surface for a sealing ring 14 of the insert 7 which with supporting perforated cylinders 8 and 9 are moulded into end caps 11 and 12 formed of sheet metal. Sealing rings 19 and 20 complete the seal between the base portion 3 and the cover 16 respectively and the end caps 11 and 12 respectively ; the centre cover 16 is held in compression against the seal 20 by a nut and centre screwed rod 17 mounted on a web 18 in known manner. In an alternative construction the end metal caps 11 and 12 may be formed of synthetic resilient plastic with sealing rings or members formed thereon ; the air filter is preferably formed with a silencing device.
