885,198. Windscreen wiper mechanisms. BOSCH G.m.b.H., ROBERT. Sept. 13, 1960 [Sept. 25, 1959; June 10, 1960], No. 31473/60. Class 138 (1). [Also in Group XXV] A windscreen wiper drive connection comprises a ball joint, the ball 10 of which has a stud 13 extending oppositely to the mounting stem 9 and enlarged at its free end 14, and the socket 11 of which is of resilient synthetic material and has an aperture 15 to receive the stud. The joint is assembled by pushing the ball into the socket until the enlargement 14 projects through the aperture 15. The margin 16 (Fig. 2) of the aperture may be comparatively thin and the enlargement of greater diameter than the aperture if the joint parts are not intended to be separated, and radial slots 17 (not shown) may be provided in the margin to assist its temporary dilation during assembly of the joint. In a modification (Fig. 7) the aperture is slot-shaped and its minimum width corresponds approximately with the diameter of the enlargement so that when the axes of the ball and socket are coincident the parts of the joint may be separated. When, as shown, the axes are inclined a portion of the enlargement covers an area of the comparatively thick margin 19 and separation is prevented. The joint parts pivot through an angle of from 8 degrees to 10 degrees.
