Abstract

884,904. Sparking pings; incandescent igniters. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Jan. 30, 1959 [Jan. 31, 1958], No. 3323/58. Class 7(4). An ignition device in a continuous combustion engine comprises two electrodes insulated from one another and forming a spark gap, one of the electrodes being so arranged and constructed as to retain a sufficiently high temperature to be capable of re-igniting the working fluid if the flame is quenched or blown out by a transient disturbance in the flow of working fluid through the engine. In Fig. 1 the electrode 10 is of a platinum alloy. A suitable alloy is disclosed in Specification 578,956. The insulator 9 is of ceramic material. The electrode 26 constitutes a re-ignition element. It may be made from a platinum alloy of the kind referred to in the Specification. The housing 25 projects across the cool air space and substantially only the electrode 10 and the tubular electrode 26 project into the flame tube. The electrode 26 may be mounted in an inclined position. In Fig. 2 the tubular reignition element constitutes the central electrode. The electrode 46 is constituted by a strip of platinum alloy brazed to the housing 25.
