Abstract

A composition comprises a graft copolymer of polyethylene with one or more monomers and a plasticizer in an amount sufficient to impart to the composition tensile properties characteristic of a high molecular weight polyethylene, the monomer employed being one such as vinyl acetate or styrene which, when homopolymerized yields a homopolymer having a value of Young's modulus higher than that typical of a high molecular weight polyethylene, or, if more than one monomer is used, they are such that, if polymerized, they yield a copolymer likewise having a value of Young's modulus higher than that typical of a high molecular weight polyethylene. The plasticizer, which may be dioctyl phthalate or diphenyl pentachloride, may be added to the polyethylene-monomer mixture before during or after subjecting to graft polymerization conditions. Monomer mixtures which may be used comprise styrene and acrylamide or vinyl pyrrolidone.
