[Also in Group XXXIV] A multiple-stroke tensioning and holding lever mechanism, for example, for hand brakes of heavy road and rail vehicles, comprises a hand lever 1 pivoted on a movable pivot 3 to a transmission lever 2 connected at 21 to the device to be tensioned, and pivoted on a fixed pivot 4 to a fixed frame 5 provided with ratchets 8, 9, for engagement with separate pawls 10, 11 pivoted on the hand lever 1, and serving not only to hold the mechanism against release of tension, but also as alternative fulcra about which the hand lever can be manually pivoted during tensioning to provide increased mechanical advantage. Compression springs 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, arranged between pivoted abutments 17, 18 on the hand lever 1, and the transmission lever 2, cause the hand lever 1 to abut a stop 20 on the transmission lever 2, and a stop 16 on the hand lever to hold a spring-loaded pawl 11 out of engagement with ratchet 9. By depressing a spring-loaded plunger 13 in the hand lever 1 the holding pawl 10 is disengaged from the ratchet 8 and tension can then be relieved by moving the lever anti-clockwise. To tension the device the hand lever 1 is rotated clockwise with transmission lever 2 about fixed pivot 4, until the load is sufficient to overcome compression of the springs 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, whereupon the hand lever rotates relative to the transmission lever about the pivot 3 and the pawl 11 is free to engage the ratchet 9 under spring load, thus providing a fixed fulcrum for further pivotal movement of the hand lever, resulting in considerably increased mechanical advantage, and also further compression of the springs. The latter may eventually pass dead-centre and subsequently assist the application of thrust. When the hand lever has reached its limit of clockwise movement it may be rotated anti-clockwise, when pawl 8 engaging ratchet 8 acts as a fixed pivot and pawl 11 slips, to apply further thrust to the transmission lever, the springs 19, 19<SP>1</SP> operating in the opposite sense.
