A plate riding roller for an oxygen cutting machine consists of a wheel disc having a peripheral groove in which is loosely retained a tyre. The wheel consists of discs 21, 23 bolted together and having a V-groove 22 carrying a non- deformable tyre 27. In modifications, rectangular or circular sectioned tyres are retained in correspondingly shaped grooves. Such rollers are used on a machine having three cutting nozzles 18, 19, 20 for preparing a plate edge for welding. The main body 10 carrying nozzles 18, 19 and mounted for vertical movement on a post 12 is supported by one roller. An auxiliary body 11 carrying the third nozzle 20 is supported by a second roller 16 and is connected by leaf springs 13 to the main body 10.
