882,662. Mixing appliances. LODIGE, W., LODIGE, F., and LUCKE, J. Nov. 20, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 39497/59. Class 86. A horizontal batch or continuous mixing machine for granular materials comprises a stationary drum 1 having detachable stirrers mounted singly or in groups as shown on arms 7 which are received in sockets 6a arranged helically round a shaft 6. The mixing elements 9 are concave, and are detachably secured to resilient supporting arms 8, and their faces make a small angle with the axis of rotation. Alternate stirrers or groups of stirrers may face in opposite directions; for continuous operation more than 50% should face the discharge end of the drum. A feed hopper 2 is provided at one end of the drum and is offset to one side thereof in the direction of rotation of the shaft 6; it may have nozzles 11 for spraying in a liquid binder. The end of the drum distant from the feed hopper is provided with a series of flaps 3, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d forming an adjustable weir. When the machine is operated as a batch mixer, all are closed during mixing and discharge into the shoot 4 is effected by opening the bottom flap 3d. When mixing is continuous and a large amount of material is required to be mixed at one time, the flap 3 is opened; the amount in the machine may be reduced by opening further flaps. There is also an inspection or cleaning door 5.
