Class 86 A mixing or blending machine for pulverulent or powdered material comprises a cylindrical drum rotatable on a horizontal axis and having helically disposed and inwardly extending ribs, fins or breakers, wherein is provided one or more flaps or flails hinged about an axis or axes parallel with but displaced from, and themselves rotatable about the axis of revolution of the drum. As described a drum 10 is supported for rotation upon rollers 15 and has helical breakers 21 of left hand pitch and shorter helical breakers 22 of right hand pitch projecting radially inwards from the drum wall. A pair of angularly spaced plates 33, 34 are clamped to a shaft 27 which is journalled for rotation within the drum in an end wall of the drum and in a frame member 30 secured within the drum. A flail 35 is secured to the plate 33 by a knuckle hinge 38 and flails 37 and 40, loaded by weights 39, 42 respectively, and connected by a knuckle hinge 41, are connected to the plate 34 by a knuckle hinge 38. In operation the drum rotates clockwise and the plates 33, 34 are carried wholly or partially round the axis of the drum with the material as the latter is carried by the breakers 21, 22. During its downward movement each flail rotates on its hinge and falls upon the material lying in the lower part of the drum, dealing to that material a substantial impact tending to compact, and diminish the amount of air held by, the material.
