- This invention relates to certain improvements in the so-called Hunso mixer or mixing machine covered by U. S. Patent No. 935,299, dated Feb. 28, 1911, and has for its object to provide convenient means for discharging the mixed material, as well as to improve the efiiciency of the machine, and to avoid objectionable friction which results from the construction hereinbefore in use, and in which some of the material leaks out between the rotating drum and the surrounding stationary housing, so that it scrapes around between the drum and housing, causing more or less friction.

MIXING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful lmprovements in lliixing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the so-called Hunso mixer or mixing machine covered by U. S. Patent No. 935,299, dated Feb. 28, 1911, and has for its object to provide convenient means for discharging the mixed material, as well as to improve the efiiciency of the machine, and to avoid objectionable friction which results from the construction hereinbefore in use, and in which some of the material leaks out between the rotating drum and the surrounding stationary housing, so that it scrapes around between the drum and housing, causing more or less friction.
In carrying the present invention into eifect the rotating drum is provided with a series of openings closed by swinging doors which, when the means for holding them closed is released, will open by gravity for the discharge of the material as the openings and doors approach the lower side of the drum in its rotation, and will also be closed by gravity as the openings and their doors move upward, such gravity-closing being preferably assisted by means which will force the doors tightly to closed positions if their weight is not sufficient to effect this result.
The invention consists in the novel features as indicated by the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a mixer embodying one form of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same looking from the right of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the mixer on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of one of the swinging doors and related parts.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a suitable frame or base provided with standards 13 which afford bearings for a driving shaft 1 1 provided with a driving pulley 15, a pinion 16 and supporting wheels 17. The pinion 16 meshes with a gear ring 18 secured to and encircling the rotating drum or cylinder 19 which is provided with rings orfianges 20 running on wheels 17 and similar wheels 21 suitably journaled on the frame or base 12. From this it will be understood that when the driving shaft 14 is in motion the drum or cylinder 19 will be rotated for the mixing operation. The material to be mixed is fed to the mixing drum or CYllIldQffIOIH a hopper 22 discharging into said drum or cylinder and sustained by suitable supports 23.
Surrounding the central portion of the rotatmg drum or cylinder 19 is a casing 24 properly supported on the frame or base 12 and open at its bottom for the discharge of the mixed material. The rotating drum or cylinder 19 is provided at its middle portion, within the casing 2 1, with a series of openings 25 normally closed by swinging doors 26. lVithin the said casing 24 is a circular track consisting of fixed and movable parts or sections 27 and 28 against which run rollers 29 carried by levers 30 pivoted to the swinging doors 26.
Between the levers 30 and the doors 26 are interposed springs 31 which normally press the said levers outward away from the said doors, the movements of said levers under the action of said springs being, however, limited by adjustable stop screws 32 tapped in lugs 33 on the levers 30 and abutting against the swinging doors 26; the said stop screws being secured in any desired positions of adjustment by lock-nuts 34. The springs 31 hold the levers 30 yieldingly in place. so that in case any obstructing ma terial gets between the door frames and the doors, to prevent the latter from closing fully, breakage will be avoided.
The swinging doors 26 are pivoted on rods 35 supported by lugs 36 bolted to the drum or cylinder 19, said rods passing through ears 36 on the said doors, the doors and their supports being thus removable and replaceable as units, which is important in making repairs.
The movable or swinging part or section 28 of the track, against which the rollers 29 run, is pivoted at 37 to the casing 24, the said swinging section having connected therewith a handle 38, by which it may be operated, and an arm 39 provided with a counterbalancing weight 40 to facilitate the manual operation of the said swinging section. The pivoted latch 41 is provided with suitable notches 2 for engagement with a pin 43 on the handle '38, so that by virtue of this construction the swinging section 28 may be held in either open or closed position.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the swinging sectionv 28 of the track is in the position denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 3 the rollers 29 will engage said track throughoutthe rotation of the drum or cylinder 19, and will thus'hold the, swing ing doors 26 tightly closed during the mixing operation. When, however, the material within the drum or cylinder has been thor oughly mixed and it is'desired to discharge the same from the drum the swinging section 28 of the track is moved from the position shown in dotted lines tothe position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, so that when the rollers 29 pass downwardbelow thefiXed portion 27 of the trackagainst which they run the swinging doors will be released and they? will then be free to open by gravity for clined blades 44 serving to force the material toward the central or middle part of the drum'where the openings 25 are located, as in the machine of Patent No. 985,299, hereinbefore referred to, so that the material within the drum may be readily discharged, when desired, through the openings at the middle portion of the drum.
The improved machine is more especially intended for use in mixing fertilizers, but
may be used for other purposes, as will be understood.

Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent':
