HOBART. M. HIINKEL, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR F ONE-FOURTH T0 CARS ON DINGES, Oil SPRINGFIELD, OHIO. i
, wasnrne Application filed May 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Homer M. HINKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ashing Mm chines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines 01 the rotating cylinder @ne of the objects of my invention is to provide an unenclosed cylinder which is designed to contain both the clothes and washing fluid and which is arranged to be tilted from a horizontal to a vertical position or vice versa, whereby the cylinder may be placed in one position to receive the clothes and in another position when in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved clamping means for securing the lid of the cylinder in position.
A further object of the invention is to de vise a washing machine which will be simple in its construction, economical in manufacture and etlective in use.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view with the axis of rotation of the-cylinder in horizontalposition. y 1
Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same.
F ig. 3 is an end view of the cylinder.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the cylinder tilted and its axis of rotation in vertical position.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of supporting the'cylinder.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing one of the sections containing the agitators on the interior of the cylinder.
F ig. 8 is a detail of one of the locking bolts and its keeper.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the longitudinal rails of the main frame, 2, 8 and 1 cross members, 5 legs and 5 braces connecting the legs. The cylinder is repre sented at 6, this cylinder having one end thereof closed by removable cover 7. The other end of the cylinder has connected therewith a spider 8, the hub 9 of which has secured thereto a horizontal longitudinally extending shaft 10 provided with a clutch member 11. Journaled in bearings 13 on the MAGHIN 1i".
Serial no. via-52a.
operating lever 16,having a pair of proto the axis of rotation, which ring fits in a grooveway formedby a channelled member and is supported by the main frame in concentric relation with the ring; this mem ber 25 having a pair of oppositely-arranged trunnions 26 journaled in bearings 27supported by the frame bars 1. This ring 25 forms a support and track for the cylinder 6 while being revolved.
In order to place the clothes in the cylinder or remove the same therefrom the cylinder is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 4 in the following manner. Pivoted on the trunnions 26 is a yoke-shaped lever 28 the center of which is upturned as indicated at 28 and apertured so as to embrace the shaft 10. One end of the member 28 is extended, as indicated at 29, and the end of this extension is pivotally connected by a link withan operating lever 31, pivoted at 82 to an car 341 projecting from the main frame. To tilt the tub from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1 the lever 31 is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 4: which causes the link 30 acting on the ex tension 29 to swing the yoke 28 to the position shown and carry with it the cylinder. lit should be. stated that before the cylinder is tilted to this horizontal position the clutch members 11 and 15 are disconnected. 'At
the point where the link is pivoted to the lever 31 the lever 31 is offset, as indicated at 31, so that when it is thrown to the position shown in Fig. 1 the pivotal point between the lever and link will swing pasta line extending between the pivotal point of the lever and link and the pivotal point of the link and extension 29 and thus lock the parts.
The interior oi the cylinder is provided with a series of sections 35, one of which is shown in Fig. 7, and each of these sections has a series of ribs 36, to form carriers and agitators, the center one ofwhich is enlarged as shown so as to act to prevent theclothes from banking in the cylinder.
Toclamp the lid 7 to the rim 6 of the cylinder I provide the lid with a rotatable spindle 37 provided with a handle 38 and having thereon a disk 38 to which are, pivoted a seriesof links 39, each link being pivotally attached to a bolt all). The bolts ex tend radially and engage with a series of keepers ll on the rim 6. The outer end of each bolt is formed with a bevelled nose 42, asindicated in Fig. 8, and the inner end of the bolt is provided with a T-shaped head 43 which projects through a slot at in the outer wall of the lid; the lid being formed ottwo spaced-apart panels 7 and 7 as shown in Flg. 5. As a result of this arrangement,
when the spindle 87 is rotated the bolts l0 willbe projected outwardly to cause their pivotal nosesto engage the keepers and thus cause the" lid to be clamped firmly against the ledge or'flange 6" (shown in dottedlines in Fig.3) projecting from the inner edge of the rim 6.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-z 1. In awashing machine, an unenclosed cylinder adapted to receive the clothes and washing fluid, a pivoted annular member upon which said cylinder is mounted to rotate, means for rotating said cylinder, said means being'arranged in line with the axis of rotation of said cylinder and including a clutch, a removable lid tor one end of said cylinder, and means for tilting said cylinder together with its supporting member to bring. the: lid in an upper horizontal posiion.
2. In a. washing machine, an unenclosedcylinder adapted to contain clothes and washing fluid, a removable lid for one end of said cylinder, means for rotating said cylinder on a horizontal axis, a ring secured to said cylinder concentricto the axis of rotation, a pivotally mounted supporting channelled member concentric with said ring in which saidv ring is rcvolubly mounted, and
icans for tilting said cylinder and supporting member to bring the axis of rotation in a vertical position with the lid in an upper horizontal position.
In a washing machine, an unenclosed cylinder adapted to receive the clothes and washingfluid, a horizontal shaft connected with said cylinder, a horizontal drive shaft in alignment with said cylinder shaft, clutch members between said shafts together with means for connecting and disconnecting the same, a pivotally mounted channelled memberconcentric with the axis of rotation of said shafts for rotatably supporting said cylinder, and a lever connected with said cylinder shaft for tilting said-cylinder about the pivotal points of said channel member for the purpose specified.
at. In a washing machine, an unenclosed cylinder adapted to receive the clothes and washing fluid, a pivoted support in which said cylinder is rotatably mounted, a shaft connected with said cylinder, means for driving said shaft, a pivotally mounted yoke-shaped lever connected with said slia'tt having an extended arm, a pivotally mountedoperating lever, and a link connecting said operating lever with said extended arm.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of May 1924.
HOBART M. HINKEL.
