IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,865, dated Jnly 18, 1865.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, V. It. DAVID, ofNewark, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my machine with the side of the tub eut away. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view in the redV line m in Fig. 1, not showing any part of the tub. Fig. 3 represents a botttomview ot' the piece J.

To enable those skilled in the art to manufactureand use myinventon, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity.

The'same letters of reference refer to corre; spending parts in the diierent gures.

A represents an ordinary wash-tub with the side cut away, so as to show the interior.

B is a narrow frame, just long enough to be set on over the top 'of the tub, the end pieces holding it iirmly in place by extending down the side of the tub. The standards or supports C C are screwed rlnly to the frame B, and

serve as a bearing for the shaft E of the bevel drive-wheel D. Said wheel stands perpendicular between the supports C C, and has its rim at one place so cast that lthe lever F can be run through'it into a socket near the center of the wheel. The' lever is used for the purpose of operating the said wheel. There is an iron journal-box, M, put into the fra-me B, and H is a pinion-wheel with a hollow shaft, or rather a hollow journal for a shaft, which passes through thejournal-box M, revolving therein. The center -I of said hollow journal is wood', and is so fitted into the journal as to be perfectly tight.

L is a metallic piece with one end made fast ink the wood center piece, I, and the other passing through,and has its bearing in the support C at O.

J is a cast-iron head put onto the lower end of the journal and fastened thereto by means of a pin, as shown in Fig. 3, in such a manner as not to turn independent of the `journal.

The'arms K are securely fastened to this head J, either by being driven into holes cast in said head or in any other suitable manner. The arms K are attached to the head J, so that they extend into the tub at different angles, some being more vertical than others, and they are also of different lengths. The longer and less vertical ones extend nearly to where the bottom ot' the tub is fitted into the'staves or walls thereof', the arrangement ofthesaid arms being-such as to stir the whole contents of the tub when the machine is in operation.

To wash clothes the operator puts the clothes and waterinto the tub A, as in ordinarycases, and then takes hold ot' the lever Fand vibrates it to and fro. 'Ihus at each vibration ot' said lever, turning the drive-wheel D part way round and back again, the drive-wheel D coin` ninnicates itsinotion to the pinion H, which, in turn, causes vthe arms K to rotate rapidly back and forth, stirring the contents ot the tub violently.

The hollow journal makes a: light casting, and at the same time-has all the advantages ot' a solid iron journal by having an iron bearaHaving thus` fully described the construction and operation of my machine, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination and arrangement of the drive-wheel l), the supports or standards C, the frame B, and the pinion II, provided with the hollow journal, when all constructed and operating substantially as described.

2. The combination and arrangement of the pinion H with the hollowjournal,the iron head J, and the arms K, when constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
