Abstract

Thermoplastic compressible materials such as polythene, polystyrene or cellulose acetate butyrate are injection moulded by forcing the material into a storage chamber, incrementally increasing the pressure within the storage chamber by forcing in additional material until it is compressed, and periodically discharging a portion of the compressed material into a mould. Heated polythene is extruded by a screw-type apparatus into a pressure boosting means such as a small hydraulic piston which forces the material into a closed storage chamber until a pressure of 20,000 p.s.i. is reached. An outlet valve is then opened and a shot of material comprising between one fifteenth and one sixtieth of the storage chamber volume flows into and fills the communicating mould owing to the decompressive force and the pressure in the chamber drops to a minimum of 10,000 p.s.i. The pressure on the material in the chamber may be maintained by a compressible fluid such as an inert gas, under pressure acting on a fluid tight movable wall within the chamber.
