Abstract

An emulsion for treating paper to render it non-adherent to other materials comprises (1) 1 to 350% by weight of a linear liquid polydimethyl siloxane of formula HO[(CH3)2SiO]nH where n is an integer greater than 1, e.g. 25 to 105, (2) from 65 to 98% of water, (3) from 0,1 to 5%, based on the weight of (1) of a methyl hydrogen polysiloxane of formula (CH3)3SiO [(CH3)HSiO]p Si(CH3)3 where p is an intege greater than 1, e.g. 10 to 1,000, (4) from 0,05 to 10% based on the weight of (1) of tin as dibutyl tin dilaurate, dibutyl tin diacetate or mixtures thereof, (5) from 0 to 10% by weight of an organic solvent and (6) from 0,1 to 3% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol as an emulsifying agent. The siloxanes are added to a polyvinyl alcohol solution containing, if desired, xylene, as a stabilizer, and homogenizing to a master emulsion to which is added a second emulsion formed by adding xylene to the organic tin salt and emulsifying this with polyvinyl alcohol solution. The polydimethyl siloxanes may be devolatilized by heating and may have viscosities in the range 50 to 2X106 centipoises or more, suitably 3X103 centipoises, these latter being obtained by diluting and heating, e.g. to 150 to 170 DEG C., the more viscous polymers. The paper may be sprayed, immersed, roller coated &c., with the emulsion and dried. Specifications 630,911 and 804,198 are referred to.
