Abstract

1413678 Treating polyester fibres EASTMAN KODAK CO 12 Oct 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 47189/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division G2] A method of imparting curvature to a film of a polyester or polycarbonate which is to be used as a photographic support comprises applying to one surface of the film a solution of a volatile phenolic compound in a solvent having a volatilization point below that of the phenolic compound and subsequently heating the film to a temperature above its 2nd order transition temperature to volatilize and completely remove the solvent and the phenolic compound. Volatile phenolic compounds are those easily removed by heating at a temperature above the 2nd order transition temperature of the polymer of which the film is made and are preferably phenol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, 4-phenyl resorcinol and 4-hexyl-resorcinol which may be applied in solutions containing 0À05-2 parts by weight of a surface-active agent and 15 to 20 parts by weight of the treating agent. The curvature imparted to the film is preferably such as to completely counteract the curvature produced when the untreated surface of the film is subsequently coated with a gelatino-silver halide photographic emulsion so that the resultant photographic film is completely flat. Examples relate to the treatment of polyethylene terephthalate films with (1) an aqueous solution of resorcinol, (2) a methylisobutylketone solution of resocinol and (3) a dichloromethane solution of phenol, the treated films being dried by heating at 130‹ C. and subsequently coated with a silver halide photographic emulsion.
